Heat loss survey

The step everyone skips. The one that matters.

Every good heat pump starts with a real heat loss survey. MCS-compliant, BS EN 12831, room-by-room. £250, refunded against the install.

Why it matters

Heat pumps only work when they're the right size.

The failures you hear about — noisy, expensive, cold — almost always trace back to a system sized on a spreadsheet instead of a survey. One bad number upstream infects every decision downstream.

  • Correctly sized heat pump — no short-cycling
  • Radiators specified for your chosen flow temperature
  • Real running cost projection for your property
  • MCS-compliant — required for the £7,500 BUS grant
  • Insulation priorities with known payback
What we measure
  • Window types, areas and glazing
  • Wall construction (solid, cavity, insulated)
  • Roof and loft insulation depth
  • Ventilation and air-tightness
  • Floor construction and insulation
  • Thermal bridging at junctions

The process

Six steps. Every survey, every time.

01
Property walk-through

Type, age, orientation, exposure. Ten-minute orientation before measurements begin.

02
Fabric + insulation check

Walls, loft, floor, windows, draughts. We borescope cavities when we can't see them.

03
Room-by-room measurements

Every room. Dimensions, window area, external wall area, ceiling heights. Nothing estimated.

04
BS EN 12831 calculation

MCS-approved software. Design day is -2°C for Staffordshire. Results per room, in watts.

05
Radiator sizing

At your chosen flow temp (typically 45°C for HP). Each rad sized for its room's heat loss.

06
System design + report

PDF you keep. Heat pump sized. Radiator schedule. Running costs. Insulation priorities.

From survey to install

The survey is step one. Here's what comes next.

Once the numbers are in, we design the full system — right heat pump, right radiators, right controls — and file the BUS grant paperwork on your behalf.

Questions?

Heat loss surveys, answered.

A room-by-room measurement of how much heat your property loses through walls, windows, floors, roof, and ventilation on the coldest day. The result is a number, in watts, for every room — that number drives every other decision.
Gas boilers have 20–30 kW of headroom. Heat pumps don't — they're sized for the exact load. Guess too high, it short-cycles and runs expensive. Guess too low, your house is cold. The survey eliminates the guess.
2–3 hours for a typical 3-bed semi. We measure every room, check glazing types, wall construction, loft insulation depth, and draughts. The design work happens afterwards, back at our office.
Access to every room including the loft. If you know your wall construction type (solid vs cavity) and whether you've had cavity wall insulation, that helps. If not, we'll assess it on the day.
£250. Fully refunded against your installation invoice if you proceed. If the maths says a heat pump isn't right for your home, we tell you — you keep the report and use it for insulation planning.
Absolutely. The report tells you where your house is haemorrhaging heat — often loft, then floor, then glazing. That's a priority list for insulation upgrades with a known payback.
