Why Heat Loss Surveys Matter

A heat pump runs most efficiently when it's precisely matched to your home's heating demand. Too large and it short-cycles, wasting energy. Too small and your home won't reach comfortable temperatures. A proper heat loss survey eliminates the guesswork.

Correctly sized heat pump

Not too big, not too small — exactly right for your home

Optimal radiator specification

Ensuring every room reaches target temperature at low flow temps

Accurate running cost estimates

Real numbers based on your property, not generic assumptions

BUS grant compliance

MCS-approved calculations required for grant applications

Insulation recommendations

Identify upgrades that could further reduce your energy bills

What We Measure

Every element of your property that affects heat loss is measured and recorded. Nothing is estimated — it's all based on real data from your home.

Window types & sizes

Single, double, or triple glazing

Wall construction

Solid, cavity, insulated cavity

Roof & loft insulation

Depth and condition

Ventilation & air tightness

Draughts, extractor fans, trickle vents

Floor construction

Suspended timber, solid concrete

Thermal bridging

Cold spots at junctions and lintels

The Survey Process

Our MCS certified engineers follow a thorough six-step process for every heat loss assessment.

1

Property Assessment

We examine your property type, age, orientation, and exposure. Each factor affects how much heat your home loses.

2

Fabric & Insulation Check

We assess walls (solid/cavity), loft insulation depth, floor construction, window glazing type, and draught levels throughout your home.

3

Room-by-Room Measurements

Every room is measured precisely. We record dimensions, window sizes, external wall area, and ceiling heights to calculate heat loss per room.

4

Heat Loss Calculation

Using MCS-approved software (BS EN 12831), we calculate the exact heat loss for each room and the total property, accounting for design temperatures.

5

Radiator Sizing

Based on the heat loss results and target flow temperature (typically 35-45°C for heat pumps), we determine whether existing radiators are adequate or need upgrading.

6

System Design & Report

You receive a comprehensive report showing heat loss per room, recommended heat pump size, radiator requirements, estimated running costs, and any insulation recommendations.

From Survey to Installation

The heat loss survey is the first step toward a comfortable, efficient heat pump system. Once we know exactly what your home needs, we design the perfect system — the right heat pump, the right radiators, and the right controls.

Heat Loss Survey FAQs

A heat loss survey (or heat loss calculation) is a room-by-room assessment of how much heat your property loses through walls, windows, floors, roof, and ventilation. It tells us exactly how much heating capacity you need, which lets us size the heat pump, radiators, and pipework correctly.
Unlike gas boilers which have plenty of spare capacity, heat pumps must be correctly sized for your property. An oversized heat pump wastes energy and cycles on/off too frequently. An undersized one won't keep your home warm. The survey ensures we get it exactly right.
For a typical 3-bed semi, a heat loss survey takes around 2-3 hours. Larger properties or those with complex layouts may take longer. We measure every room, check insulation levels, window types, wall construction, and more.
Just make sure we can access all rooms in your property, including the loft if possible. It helps if you know your wall construction type (solid or cavity) and whether you have cavity wall insulation, but we can assess this during the survey.
Our heat loss surveys cost £250. This covers a full room-by-room assessment, MCS-compliant calculations, a detailed report with radiator sizing, and system design recommendations. If you proceed with a heat pump installation, the survey fee is deducted from your installation cost.
We use MCS-approved heat loss calculation methods based on BS EN 12831. This is the industry standard required for BUS grant applications. We also factor in real-world conditions like prevailing wind direction and property orientation.
Absolutely. The survey identifies where your home loses the most heat, which helps prioritise insulation upgrades. Even if you don't install a heat pump immediately, the report shows you how to make your home more efficient and reduce energy bills.
